Welcome to the Fly Fish Boston Harbor!

Welcome to the Fly Fish Boston Harbor! For the past ten years, many local saltwater fly fishing adventures were featured in the Fly Fisherman's Café, my other blog. I now offer guided shore trips in Boston Harbor, priced at $350 for a 4hr trip. The Boston Harbor is a unique urban setting, where you can catch wild striped bass on a fly from May through October. Recommended Gear

  • Rod/Reel: Saltwater fly rods in line weights 6 to 10 can be used, depending on the conditions, location and the size of fish. However I recommend an all-around 9' 9wt graphite (or a glass, if you prefer.) Stripers are not known for long, sustained runs, so any decent modern saltwater friendly fly reel will work. Stripping basket is standard.
  • Fly line/leader: Bring a quality cold saltwater intermediate fly line of your preference. Simple saltwater leader should be terminated with the 16 or 20lb tippet (I recommend 20lb.)
  • Flies: A selection of Deceivers, Clousers, Hollow Flies, Gurglers and similar patterns. I will have flies ready, depending on the bait situation. The most common baitfish you will encounter will be sea herring, silversides and peanut bunker. Tinkers, squid or smelt may be around, depending on the season.
  • Waders: Chest waders and boots with felt or stud soles. Vibram soles will work great on mussel bars or muddy bottom. Rocks tend to be very slippery.
